The Montessori philsophy is based on the belief that a child learns best within a social environment that supports and nurtures each individual's unique development pattern. Montessori education promotes a child's total development. Montessori helps all children achieve at their own pace without feeling they are ahead or left behind. Montessori education recognizes the individual potential in every child and guides each child to discover that potential.Montessori education was founded by Dr. Maria Montessori. Dr. Maria Montessori was born in 1870, she was the first woman to graduate in Italy to become a certified medical doctor, she developed an educational method that is different from the way we normally teach our children applying traditional methods. She based her method on scientific observations made while working with a number of children from different cultural, social and economic backgrounds. This in turn led to specific epiphanies regarding childrens learning processes. One of her observations was that the young children learn best in a homelike setting surrounded by developmentally appropriate materials taht provide life experiences. Through observations, Dr.Montessori indicated that children must be respected as individualswho are no different from adults. Children integrate knowledge through purposeful activity. The most important years of learning are from birth to age six. Children possess unusual sensivity and mental powers for absorbing and learning from their environment which includes people as well as materials.

Every classroom operates on the principle of freedom within limits and is based on core Montessori beliefs - respect for each other and the environment. The child is free to work at his/her own pace with the materials they choose. The directress relies on her scientific observation to determine which new activity to introduce to the child. The aim is to encourage active, positive and self-directed learning. The younger children are inspired and motivated to ask for explanations, while they have older children sharing what they have learnt while simultaneously reinforcing their own learing and leadership skills. This encourages an atmosphere of inspiration and co-operation. Bolton Montessori School was established in 1998. We welcome families who are looking for a program that is holistic in nature. We incorporated the Montessori method for its uniqueness and holistic approach. This approach has stood its test for over a century and clearly exemplifies a distinction between a montessorian who has completed the full time three year program and a non-montessorian - particularly in language and conceptual development. We have a program for toddlers between the ages of eighteen months to two and a half years and a program for junior and senior kindergarten children between the ages of two and a half to five years.
